Rosemary and peppermint: the story behind our hair oil

Rosemary and peppermintThe story behind our hair oil

Why rosemary and peppermint? Our stylists share what goes into our hand-blended hair oil, the three ways we love to use it, and how a few drops can turn your routine into a ritual.

Some of our favourite products are the simplest. Our Rosemary and Peppermint Hair Oil started life in the salon, where our stylists wanted something lightweight to finish a blow dry and something soothing to use during a scalp massage. It became a client favourite so quickly that it is now part of The Hair Mixologist range, hand blended and made in Yorkshire.

Why rosemary and peppermint?

Rosemary, the classic

Rosemary has been part of hair and beauty rituals for centuries. Its fresh, herbal scent is instantly uplifting, and it gives the blend its clean, green character.

Peppermint, the wake-up call

Peppermint brings a cool, fresh tingle that makes a scalp massage feel wonderfully refreshing. It is the part of the oil our clients notice first, and the reason so many tell us it has become the best five minutes of their day.

A few drops, a few quiet minutes. That is all it takes to turn a routine into a ritual.

What's in the bottle

Behind the scent is a blend of five hair-loving plant oils, each chosen for the way it feels on the hair and scalp. Together they make an oil that is light enough to use every day, but rich enough to leave hair feeling truly nourished.

Fractionated coconut oil

The lightweight base of the blend. It stays clear and silky, sinks in quickly and never feels greasy, which is why the oil glides so easily through the lengths.

Grape seed oil

One of the lightest plant oils there is. It absorbs easily, so hair feels soft and conditioned rather than coated.

Jojoba oil

Jojoba is remarkably similar to the oils your scalp makes naturally, so it feels comfortable and balanced. A lovely choice for a scalp massage.

Castor oil

Richer and thicker than the others, castor oil helps smooth the surface of the hair, adding a glossy finish and helping to tame flyaways.

Argan oil

Often called liquid gold, argan oil is prized for leaving hair feeling soft and looking shiny, and for helping to keep frizz at bay.

Three ways to use it

1. The scalp ritual

Warm a few drops between your palms and massage slowly into your scalp with your fingertips, working in small circles. Leave it for thirty minutes, or overnight for a real treat, then shampoo as normal. Once a week is perfect.

2. The finishing touch

Smooth a single drop over the ends of damp or dry hair to tame flyaways, soften frizz and add shine. A little goes a long way, so start with less than you think.

3. Before styling

Apply a drop or two to the lengths before you blow dry. It leaves hair feeling smoother and looking glossier once you have finished.

Good to know

  • A little goes a long way: one 30ml bottle lasts for weeks of regular use
  • That tingle is normal: it is the peppermint, and it fades after a few minutes
  • Be gentle: keep away from your eyes, and if you have sensitive skin, try a little on your scalp first
  • Full ingredients: Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (Fractionated Coconut Oil), Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil. Contains naturally occurring Linalool and Limonene.
