Why regular trims matter: the secret to healthy hair

Why regular trims matterThe secret to healthy hair

Growing your hair, or just want it to feel its best? A regular trim is the simplest thing you can do for healthy, glossy hair. Our stylists at Escape Hair explain why, and how often to book in.

There is a question we hear in the salon chair almost every week: "If I'm trying to grow my hair, why would I cut it?" It is a fair question, and the answer is one of the best-kept secrets in hair care. A regular trim is not about losing length. It is about keeping the length you have looking healthy, soft and full.

What really happens to the ends of your hair

Your ends are the oldest hair you have

The hair at your ends may be two or three years old. In that time it has been through hundreds of washes, countless blow dries, sunny holidays, cold winters and every hair tie you have ever used. It is no surprise that it starts to look tired.

Split ends travel

Once the tip of a hair splits, the split does not stay put. Left alone, it can carry on up the strand, so the dry, frayed section gets longer over time. A trim takes it away cleanly before it has the chance.

A trim does not make your hair grow faster. It stops you losing the length you have already grown.

The benefits of a regular trim

Smoother, shinier hair

Healthy ends reflect light far better than dry, frayed ones, so freshly trimmed hair looks glossier straight away.

Less tangling and breakage

Split ends catch on each other and on your brush. Take them away and hair detangles more easily, with less snapping as you style it.

A shape that keeps its shape

A good cut is designed to fall in a certain way. Regular trims keep that shape, so your hair is easier to style every single day.

Fuller-looking ends

Thin, wispy ends make hair look sparse. A trim brings back a neat, fuller-looking edge, which is especially noticeable on longer hair.

How often should you book in?

Every head of hair is different, but as a guide:

  • Short styles: every four to six weeks, to keep the shape crisp
  • Medium length: every six to eight weeks
  • Growing it longer: every eight to twelve weeks, taking off just enough to keep the ends healthy

Tell your stylist if you are growing your hair. We will take off only what is needed, often no more than a centimetre.

Looking after your ends between trims

A few small habits make every trim last longer. Use a heat protector every time you reach for your dryer or straighteners, condition your mid lengths and ends rather than your roots, and smooth a drop of hair oil through the ends to keep them soft. Swap tight elastics for soft scrunchies, and always detangle gently from the ends upwards.
